U.S. troops bivouac in a rice paddy in Burma, where units of the American Mars Task Force and the Chinese 38th and 50th Divisions in February, 1945, were clearing the Japanese from the east Burma approaches to the Irrawaddy River and Mandalay in central Burma. Capture of Molo on February 7, 1945, left only the 20-mile (32 km) stretch between Molo and Myitson to be cleared of the enemy in northeastern Burma. British Fourteenth Army troops on February 8, widened their bridgehead on the east bank of the Irradwaddy River, opposite Kyaukmyaung, in central Burma, to two and a half miles (four kms.). Kyaukmyaung is 45 miles (72 kms) north of Mandalay. NI 9224
