U.S. Marine General Shepherd talks to orphaned Okinawan child. Major General Lemuel C. Shepherd, commander of the Sixth U.S. Marine Division on Okinawa, talks to an orphaned child in the arms of an Okinawan Nurses' Aid. He is visiting one one of the civilian camps on the Ryukyu (Loochoo) island, which was wrested from the Japanese June 20, 1945, after 82 days of bitter fighting. The U.S. Military Government on Okinawa provides humanitarian needs for the civilians, of whom 265,000 had come under the care of U.S. forces by July 2. Now houses are to be built under U.S. Military Government supervision. An agricultural experiment program is under way, and a Missing Persons Department has been established to reunite families separated during the fighting. Okinawa is 375 miles (600 km.) from Japan.
