Boeing 'B-29 Superfortress'. Superforts serviced outdoors on Saipan. Resting in bays adjoining the new American air base on Saipan in the Marianas Islands, a brace of B-29 Superfortress bombers are ready to take off for an attack on Japan. Hangars had not yet been built on the rapidly constructed field, which was used by the huge planes less than five months after the island was captured from the Japanese. Supefortresses based here opened a new phase of the war on Japan when on November 23, 1944, they bombed plants in the Tokyo area. A second attack on the Japanese capital followed only three days later.
