American vehicles and equipment pour ashore on Saipan. U.S.

American vehicles and equipment pour ashore on Saipan. U.S. Army jeeps, part of an endless stream of material which America is pouring into the Pacific battle areas, roll ashore at Saipan after riding in on LCVP's (landing craft-vehicles, personnel). Americans seized Saipan, in the Central Pacific Marianas, on July 8, 1944, after 25 days of desperate Japanese resistance. Its capture breaches the Japanese inner line of defense and the subsequent resignation of Japanese Premier-General Hideki Tojo and his cabinet indictates the serious nature of this defeat to the Japanese. Hardly had the firing ceased on Saipan than U.S. forces stormed ashore on Guam, southernmost of the Marianas on July 20.
