U.S. Superfortress flyers receive instructions before Tokyo attack. Seated in a briefing room on Saipan, pilots of American B-29 Superfortress bombers receive flight instructions from Brigadier General Emmett O'Donnell, Jr., who gives them a chart talk prior to their first attack on Tokyo's war industries. General O'Donnell led the historic assault, which was the first blow in a new phase of the air war against Japan. The attack on the enemy capital, followed by two others in less than six days, served unmistakable notice that henceforth no part of the aggressor nation will be safe from U.S. bombers.
