U.S.-manned craft carries Australians to Sadau shore. A U.S. Navy-manned landing craft carries Australians toward the bombed, smoking shore of Sadau, small island six miles (10 km) northwest of Tarakan, off the east coast of Borneo, April 29, 1945. The next day, Australian troops, transported and supported by U.S. Navy units, landed on Tarakan, one of the world's richest oil fields. By May 23, the Australians had virtually secured the island and were engaged in mopping-up operations. For months preliminary to the landings, Tarakan had been cut off from Japan's home islands by Allied air and naval might.
