Pacific veterans reach U.S. on the day that marked the end of the war Wounded veterans of the Pacific war, wearing shoulder casts, express their joy aboard a U.S. Navy transport which docked in New York on August 14, 1945, the day that marked the end of the war. At 7:00 P.M. (eastern War Time) on August 14, U.S. President Harry S. Truman announced that the Japanese had accepted the Allies unconditional surrender terms as stated in the Potsdam Ultimatum.
