A crew member of a B-25 Mitchell medium bomber holds a pair of shells fired by the powerfull 75-mm. cannon whose muzzle bristles in the nose of the plane below one of the fourteen .50-caliber machine guns. The bomber is about to take off for target practice at a U.S. Army Air Forces tactical center in the Southeastern U.S. Armed with the cannon, the heaviest in use in Alllied aircraft, bombers of this type have wreaked havoc upon enemy shipping, airfields, tanks and fortitications in the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters. During one raid over the Central Pacific, cannon-carrying Mitchells sank a 4,000-ton Japanese freighter, probably sank a destroyer and several smaller craft, damaged enemy aircraft and wrecked large installations on a Japanese base.
