Japan

Allied prisoners rescued from Japanese taken to U.S. hospital. Allied prisoners of war who were found in need of medical treatment when they were released from a Japanese interment camp are carried to a U.S. hospital ship in a small boat. By Aug. 30, 1945, a total of 1.494 prisoners had been freed from seven camps on the evemy mainland. U.S. Navy Commander Harold E. Stassen, former Governor of the midwestern U.S. state of Minnosota, in charge of the rescue work, said that everyone rescued was suffering from malnutrition and that 80 per cent showd serious deficiencies. This is a radiophoto sent to the U.S. from the U.S. battleship Iowa in Tokyo Day. NI 9225
